You gotta be kidding me!
Go read this news story, about a 13 year old boy who has Asperger syndrome, took his dad's car, drive 30 miles to the airport. Bought himself and airline ticket so he could go visit his mother. How in the WORLD was he able to use his dad's credit card without ID? This is ridiculous that he got that far! Can you imagine the panic his dad was feeling, knowing his 13 year old son was driving the CAR? What were the odds he'd make it somewhere without crashing? WOW!!! Still, shame on the airline with their archaic regulations.

One of my respite clients in California, a young woman in her 20's in her 20's with Downs Syndrome, wanted to go with her boyfriend and his family to a family reunion in New York. She stole the boyfriend's mom's credit card and booked her ticket online. She stole around $50 in small amounts from her family members. She got herself to the airport on the airporter bus, but didn't have the credit card or proof she bought the ticket on-line (it was found later) when she was at the ticket counter.
This young woman was always strong-willed and determined. I started to feel guilty about helping her learn so many "real-life" skills, and helped her learn her computer skills on the internet!!!
I'd keep an eye on Angela in the future...if there is a will, there is a way. I am constantly surprised at what people thought the disabled kids I have worked with wouldn't be capable of...but it turns out they were capable of!!!
I adore Angela...and love that pirate room. Laurie (now an occupational therapist)
