Moving On

Sometimes I don't have time to write.

Who am I kidding? I am really busy, and rarely have time to write anymore. Sometimes it's just easier, and faster, to talk. We've been getting ready for some big changes here in the Garden of Eagan.   Today I'm talking about some of them.

Sounds like Angela will be set up for success when she moves out. It was great to "see you" and the update! Looking forward to more.

Hello. I've read your blog off & on for a few years. My stepdaughter is 31 and we are going through very similar things. (Would be better off learning/hearing things from someone other than a parent is definitely one!) While I realize we're in different states (we're in Massachusetts), I'd be interested in hearing how you/Angela will go about finding a place for her to live outside of the family home. We are encountering many challenges in this area.

We went through some of these same things with Beth when she was in her 20s. I remember yelling at her, frustrated that she wouldn't listen to anything we said, didn't want any instruction from us and I would tell her, "It's time for you to move out! Get into a place with your friends! You'll be able to make your own decisions!" But I could tell she really didn't want to move out. Her favorite saying was, "But I'm an adult and I can do what I want!" She'd stay up til 2 or 3 in the morning, she'd eat in the middle of the night... it was crazy for a while! But then she, I don't know, grew up a little more and was willing to take instruction from us. It's hard enough when your typical kids grow up and you have to figure out the parent/child relationship as adults but when your daughter with special needs turns 18 and wants to have all the perks of being an adult but you KNOW they absolutely aren't ready, it's hard! Angela seems more independent than Beth. Beth is 33 now and we've turned our daylight basement into an apartment for her, with a small kitchen, bedroom and living room. She loves it and things are MUCH better now. I'm excited for Angela's future but I understand your concern! It'll be an adventure!
