About a week and a half ago, on one of our very few semi-warm days so far this spring (warm being over 30 degrees!) Dean noticed a pair of chickadees working on a nest in a hollow tree that had broken off last fall.
I watched, and I waited. I didn't have to wait very long, because these two were in a hurry! I haven't seen the female for a couple of days, so I'm sure she's sitting on eggs now. Each time they came out of the hole, they had a beak-ful of shavings from inside. They have to clean out that hole for the babies that will be here soon!
See the bird waiting on the branch? He's waiting for the female to come out of the hole, then he'll go in. If you look closely you can see the tip of the female's tail in in the hole.
They came out of the hole like little rockets!
Guess what I'll be watching for the next few weeks? Between the
humming birds and the chickadees, my camera is gonna be busy this spring!
