HOM Furniture complaint!

So a year ago, at HOM's annual Memorial Day Sale, we splurged. We bought a new mahagony entertainment center and a huge leather sectional sofa. Because the sofa color was special ordered, our furniture wasn't delivered until August. It was a looooong summer without furniture in the living room!

So a couple months ago we noticed an area on the leather sofa where the color was peeling off. Hmmmm....I decided to wait and watch it, since everything is on Warranty for one year from delivery date. Then last week I was sitting on the couch, watching TV, when I noticed a weird spot on the entertainment center. Keep in mind that we paid several THOUSAND dollars for this piece of MAHOGANY furniture. It's beautiful, goes perfectly in our newly remodeled space, and is very unique. Yeah...so unique that what I was seeing was LAMINATE peeling off in two different areas of the piece!!! Ummm...we didn't pay for LAMINAE!

UGH! I'm so frustrated! Mostly because now it has to be replaced, and I LOVE THIS THING! Everyone who visits here says they've never seen anything like it, and it's just gorgeous!

So yesterday HOM sent a guy out to take a look at the furniture. They'll be replacing the love seat portion of the sectional, but they have to match the color to the rest of it. We won't know till it comes if it's an exact match. If it doesn't they'll have to replace the whole thing. With the entertainment center, we said we don't want an exact replacement since it's obviously NOT what we were told we were getting, and it would just happen again, so we were given a store credit to pick out something else.

So why am I bothered when HOM is standing behind their warranty and replacing everything? We spent several thousand dollars on this furniture. Both pieces are made by different companies, yet they are BOTH major defects to them. It does NOT make me feel good about getting anything...anywhere...in any store, but why are there two companies that HOM is carrying have defective furniture? That really bothers me.

So there, that's my vet of the day! And, if you've come to this post after searching for complaints against HOM furniture, I have a couple other more recent posts as well...all relating to THIS issue and TRYINg to get it resolved, and NONE of it good!

  1. That sucks! One thing I've learned is that 99% of all furniture sold by large furniture stores is crap!!! No matter the cost most everything is particle board with laminate over the top--with maybe some solid wood somewhere inside. Unless you buy from Ethan Allen or a custom furniture maker the average person can't even buy solid wood furniture. We're all better off buying antiques--their always solid wood. It sucks!!!

  2. Thanks for commenting JSB23. HOM furniture is very similar to Ethan Allen. I don't think there is any furniture made 'right' anymore!

  3. Sorry Leah! JSB23 was me--forgot to sign out of Josh's account. The only place you're really going to get solid wood is through an Amish maker or some private place.

Hello. I find your blog very interesting. I think that it is better to consult a specialist before buying furniture. The high price does not always mean quality the same as the brand name. I consider Ethan Allen Furniture to be great. It is not that expensive but the choice is enormous and the quality of the furniture ios great. I looked through www.pissedconsumer.com for clients’ feedbacks and I found very few of them. Now, it is up to you to decide what to choose.

  6. Here's my experience:

I recently bought a $799 Sitcom Edo King bed from them. It was a Saturday night, 5pm. The Salesman, Bob, was ok, but not too enthusiastic. So with no real input from Bob, me and my wife liked the bed and purchased it. Of course they did not have it in stock at their store, the had it at their distribution center in CoonRapids, some 30+ miles away.

So I head out there that night, pick up the bed and get home, excited about getting this thing put up... Start assembling the bed, 80% of the screws are missing... The stores were closed for the night, so I call in the morning.

After at least 12 minutes on hold (no physical person answers the phone, you must go through a menu and wait) I get someone, explain the situation and get put on hold for another 15 minutes. Katie, from their CoonRapids service department says they will pull some beds and look for the screws for me. I was not rude, although I was pretty upset... you buy something for this much, you expect a bag of $5 dollar screws to be in there (the instructions say they should be).

I never get a call back, I have to call them another 2 times, wait on hold then Katie tells me that Their warehouse person is not finding any screws with the other same style beds either... Now, I can't imagine that I'm the first person, in all of the states where HOM operates, to buy this bed, so I assume they have heard of this problem right? No she says, happens once a Blue Moon... Anyways, now it 2 days and nights later, still no phone call and I am sleeping on a bed with basically just slats run across them - unscrewed, headboard - unscrewed, ME - SCREWED.

Great customer service right? I will never buy from these unethical people again.

  7. I just bought a set of sofa from "HOM" for my parents for Christmas. They worth over 1 grand, three days later the arm rest crack when I was trying to get up from the seat. Yup, cheap wood it is! I wanted to exchanged it for a different set but they wouldn't even replace it or credit me. Instead they sent someone to fix it but couldn't even get the job done!!! And their customer services sucks!!! People are rude and it doesn't seem like they even want to help you at all. I GOT RIPPED OFF FROM THEM!! I hope no one makes the mistake i did. Your money's better off somewhere else.

  8. I know this is an old thread, but I worked in the warehouse at HOM. Everything they sell is junk. We would spray paint furniture or color on it with markers on a daily basis. The attitude over there is delivery it, hide the blemish by distracting the customer, and we can blame it on them later. There were limitless sofas that we sold as leather that were not, and the same with the laminate pieces. Their mentality is if the customer doesn't see it then we don't care.

Hom is a horrid company to purchase from. I made the mistake of purchasing from them on two separate occasions. Both purchases had issues with in the first 3 months of ownership. Of course most when you attempt to exchange an item you are told that it’s not a clearance item and they no longer have it, but you can replace it but then if you purchased an extended warranty it becomes void and you lose that money.
